"A race againts time ensures. Cinderella must be discovered before the Duke departs. While the Ducke's lackely patiently tries to fit the slipper upon one daughter, the little pet's labor frantically to procure the key, even enlisting the aid of a friendly woodpecker.
Bluebirds act like scouts, bringing the busy mice a blow-by-blow description of the futile tussle between the puffing lackey and the ungainly girl who is determined to force her foot into the dainty shoe.
The stepmother stands by, bestowing a forced smile upon the Duke from time to time. Finally the daughter reluctantly concedes defeat and the second one readies herself for the test.
Now the key has been found and the little mice scurry along the baseboard with it, bound for the stairway.
The second sister's ungainly foot discourages the lackey, but he conscientiously strives to fit the slipper, until she grudgingly is forced to admit that "there must be some mistako." Assuming an air of curiosity, the mother asks if she may examine the slipper, whereupon she feigns clumsiness and lets it drops from her fingers, where is shatters to small bits on the marble floor."
